The reason behind 'return to office' policies
Sep 23, 2024
NORTH DAKOTA (KXNET) -- Last Monday, Amazon shocked everyone when the CEO told workers that they were to report to the office every weekday starting in January.
The decision was one of the toughest return-to-office policies from a major corporation since the pandemic.
This move by Amazon is also uncommon for a tech industry business that has embraced remote and hybrid work arrangements.
Currently, Amazon employees have been reporting in person three days a week.
While advocates of in-office work reason that showing up helps to foster collaboration and feelings of connectedness, skeptics say the company could be setting the mandate to reduce headcount, since some employees may search for more flexible jobs and leave.

The CEO says the move is designed to improve the company culture, but workers are already complaining on internal forums.
However, Amazon isn't alone in remote work — Disney is another major company that has also summoned full in-office work.
Employees for Disney, however, only have to work four days, typically Monday through Thursday.
"In a creative business like ours, nothing can replace the ability to connect, observe, and create with peers that comes from being physically together, nor the opportunity to grow professionally by learning from leaders and mentors," said Disney's CEO, Bob Iger.
