BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) -- Baton Rouge resident and cancer survivor Courtney Fournet has a new outlook on life after she was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia at the age of 27. Fournet describes a cancer diagnosis as an event that "kind of just makes your world stop." Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia is a rare form of leukemia that was known to have a low survival rate. Fournet said 20 years ago the survival rate was less than 10% and patients were given months to live but now because of clinical trials and research, rates have improved. After some groundbreaking treatment and participation in a trial at MD Anderson Cancer Center, Fournet is fully cancer-free. Fournet said the clinical trial she's a part of has a current survival rate of 97%. She said she and her husband relied on the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society as a resource for information, support and financial assistance. Now they want to help give back by hosting a pickleball tournament. "We just wanted to do something that kind of got our community involved and also gave back to the organization and pickleball has been exploding, especially around Baton Rouge. So we wanted to host a tournament that kind of added some fun to giving back," said Fournet. The Crush Cancer Pickleball Tournament is set for 12:30-4:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29 at Stacks Pickleball, 1000 Celtic Drive Stage #4, Baton Rouge.
