FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - Two domestic violence cases were reported in Fresno County over the weekend where other people came to the aid of the alleged victims.  One incident happened at around 9 a.m. on Sunday.  Fresno Police officers responded to Van Ness and Alhambra avenues in the Tower District for a reported stabbing victim. According to Lt. Steve Card, the incident started with a fight between a man and a woman. “It did appear to be a domestic-related argument. I'm not sure what their status is, but they appeared to be a couple involved in an argument," explained Lt. Steve Card.  “This drew the attention of two male subjects who approached the male victim and the female and confronted the male about arguing with the female. One of the male suspects produced what we believe to be a pocketknife and slashed the victim several times, resulting in injuries.”  The man attacked with a knife was hospitalized and treated for the wounds. He and the woman in this case are cooperating with the investigation.  Lt. Card said the two other men involved in the attack fled the scene. “We're actively looking for information and the identity of the subjects involved," Lt. Card said.  Another investigation is underway in Fresno County for a domestic violence-related incident that happened Saturday.  According to Tony Botti with the Fresno County Sheriff's Office, deputies were sent to a home on Fowler Avenue just south of Clarkson near Selma. “A woman called in saying that her boyfriend was beating her up. In the meantime, she was able to contact a relative of hers that relatives showed up along with his friend," he explained. "They were able to intervene. It ended with this relative shooting the boyfriend who was being violent. Once he was struck, he was able to make his way up the road and he collapsed in front of the Wildflower Market." At last check, the two men involved with firing the gun were detained by deputies with the sheriff's office.  Botti said the shooting is still under investigation and expressed that these types of incidents can happen to anyone.  "At this point, we're trying to figure out exactly what happened. We don't know if this was a case of self-defense. We don't know if this was something after the fact where maybe it was a retaliation from the person who shot," Botti explained. "We know that violence can spiral out anywhere at any time. So the fact that it happened at this home, is really just as likely as anywhere else that it could happen." Nicole Linder is the CEO of the Marjaree Mason Center, a domestic abuse treatment center in Fresno. "Since September of last year, we've been seeing an average of 8 to 900 hotline calls every single month," she noted. "The goal is to [equip] people with tools to have healthy behaviors, both personally and within their relationship so that things don't escalate to where we're talking about stabbings and shootings. Because at the end of the day, that's what everybody works really hard to avoid." She said if you do find yourself in a violent situation, notify the police. "Please call 911, and there's obviously unique circumstances where somebody nearby is going to have an ability to de-escalate. But I would say, please leave that to the professionals. I would say the most important thing is to get yourself help," Linder explained.  Ultimately, Linder believes a part of the fight against domestic violence involves self-reflection.  "Domestic violence starts with each and every one of us and taking a look in the mirror. So that's what everybody can do. Take a look in the mirror and say, 'What are the controlling behaviors that I exhibit in my relationships and how can I change my trajectory,'" she said.  For more information about the Marjaree Mason Center, click here.  If you are experiencing domestic violence, you can call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 or the Marjaree Mason Center's crisis hotline at 559-223-4357 for help.
