SALINA, Kan. (KSNW) - A JetBlue flight headed to California from New York was diverted to Kansas on Saturday. JetBlue Airways Flight 1189 departed from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York just before 4 p.m. ET. According to JetBlue, during the flight, pilots received an alert that there may be smoke in the cargo hold area. The captain declared an in-air emergency and rapidly diverted to Salina Regional Airport. The Salina Airport Authority (SAA) ARFF personnel and the Salina Fire Department were notified at 6:20 p.m. The plane landed safely and without incident at Salina Regional Airport around 6:30 p.m. CT. "Once safely on the ground, an initial reconnaissance of the aircraft by Salina Airport Authority ARFF and Salina Fire Department personnel indicated no immediate emergency with no indication of an active fire," the Salina Fire Department told KSN. "All passengers exited the aircraft safely, Salina Airport Authority ARFF and Salina Fire Department personnel performed an in-depth investigation of the cargo area, as well as removed and inspected all luggage, no evidence of smoke or fire was found. "Upon inspection, we determined the smoke indication presented to our pilots was a false indication," JetBlue told KSN. JetBlue does not service Salina Regional Airport, so passengers had to wait for another plane to arrive so they could continue their flight. The plane departed just after 3 a.m. CT Sunday and landed just after 3:45 a.m. PT at San Diego International Airport. According to the Salina Airport Authority, about 130 passengers were on board, and no one was injured. The FAA said that they are investigating.
