OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) - Starting in October, the state department of corrections will have body cameras on all their officers in prison facilities across Oklahoma. “Adding body cams to our correctional officers just adds another layer of transparency to help protect the inmates and our staff,” ODOC Chief of Public Relations Kay Thompson said. "We did training with wardens, deputy wardens and chiefs of security this last week to learn how to operate the platform and how to pull down the videos,” Thompson said. The agency also did a pilot program for them at two of their facilities. One at a minimum security and another at a maximum security prison. "During the program, we actually saw a 40 percent reduction in serious incidents and a 60% reduction in PREA (Prison Rape Elimination Act) allegations,” Thompson said. The cameras come following a state lawmakers call for change within Oklahoma prisons early this year. Rep. J.J. Humphrey accused the ODOC of failing inmates during a Criminal Justice and Corrections Committee meeting back in March. He brought up rape and deaths reported to him by department of corrections staff at the time. Something should be done,” Humphrey said to KFOR at the time. Thompson said they think this is key to fixing those issues moving forward. "It just adds a lot of safety and security,” she said. “For instance, use of force is will be lowered. PREA (Prison Rape Elimination Act) allegations are also lowered by use of the body cameras." "The approximate cost is $1 million per year. Currently, we are using appropriated funds for the cameras. The pilot ran officially for 90 days, but those facilities have had the cameras this entire time." Thompson added. As of right now, Thompson said they plan to take over operations of the Lawton Correctional Facility next summer. They will add body camera’s there when that’s done.
