Officer shot ‘multiple times’, seriously injured after North Carolina traffic stop Horry County police were asked Friday to investigate the Lee County incident that ended with the death of 27-year-old Austin Modlin. Authorities said Modlin shot a McBee police officer during a traffic stop in Chesterfield County, prompting a multiagency search. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division said the officer was in the hospital but expected to be OK. Nexstar-affiliate WJZY in Charlotte reported that the officer was shot Thursday night near McBee High School and a convenience store near S. 11th Street. It did not happen on school property. Lee County Sheriff Daniel Simon said in a statement that one of his deputies was injured, while K9 officer Mikka was killed in the line of duty. "I want to thank Horry County for taking the lead in investigating this incident, and all of our partners for their support and assistance. There's been so much community support from near and far, and each person and agency that has reached out to check on us and offered their prayers is appreciated." The Hartsville Police Department was among several agencies that paid tribute to Mikka, posting her photo and condolences to its Facebook page. "We are greatly saddened by the loss of K9 Mikka, who was as much a member of our team as my chief deputy who was injured," Simon said. Modlin's autopsy is planned for 10 a.m. on Tuesday.
