FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - Friday nights in the fall are all about the gridiron game. From time to time, girl football players will step up and make an impact throughout northeast Indiana. Will there ever come a time when the ladies have a league of their own? That may be coming to fruition in the near future. For the first time this fall, all five FWCS high schools are sponsoring a girls flag football team. In partnership with the Indianapolis Colts, North Side, South Side, Northrop, Snider and Wayne wrapped up their three-week regular season over the weekend. The fall league is an expansion of the Colts' pilot league from last fall. Five Indianapolis-area high schools and three from South Bend competed in the inaugural season last fall. This season, the list of schools expanded to 27. Indiana's growing interest in girls flag football follows a similar trend seen nationwide. This past week, Pennsylvania sanctioned girls flag football as a high school sport. 12 other states have also made girls flag football a state-sponsored sport. Players and coaches hope girls flag football can soon be declared an emerging sport by the IHSAA, similar to boys volleyball and girls wrestling. The Fort Wayne girls flag football league wraps up next weekend with the "Fort Wayne Bowl." Elimination games are scheduled Saturday throughout the day, with the championship set for 6:15 p.m. at South Side High School.
