WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- Car Free Day is a worldwide event that encourages people to use greener modes of transportation, and it is coming to the DMV. Commuter Connections is hosting Car Free Day on Monday, Sept. 23. On this day, everyone is encouraged to use environmentally friendly transportation options, such as biking, walking, bicycling and carpooling. The event aims to show people the benefits of sustainable transportation, including reducing traffic and greenhouse gas emissions. The Car Free Day campaign also encourages workers who can telework to do so during Car Free Day. In honor of the initiative, the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) will offer free rides all day. Passengers can ride fare-free on the Local bus, Metro Subway, MARC train, Commuter Bus and the Mobility paratransit system. “There’s never been a better time to try transit and we're excited to go fare-free in recognition of World Car-Free Day,” said Maryland Transit Administrator Holly Arnold. “By choosing to ride transit you are helping to improve our environment by reducing emissions while at the same time decongesting our roadways.” Fall has arrived: Here’s what to know about the autumnal equinox Residents around the DMV are welcome to take the Car Free Day pledge. Everyone who signs will be automatically entered into a raffle to win various prizes.
