ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Every day, 22 veterans are lost to suicide. That's according to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4658. Sunday, the nonprofit organization hosted its fourth annual "Walk 22," an initiative to change that narrative. "We try and bring awareness that you don't have to suffer alone, that you can come and join any American Legion, any VFW event, and as soon as you walk in the door, you are welcomed," said member Karen Heintz. As its name suggests, members were tasked with walking for 22 minutes outside the American Legion Post 468 in Rochester to honor the thousands of veterans who struggle each year. Their message: "They marched for us; we walk for them." "We are here for you. We are here for you," began Service Officer Daniel Perna. "Just remember that we're just part of the resource, you know? The VFW and the American Legion here, we're here for you. Get ahold of us, come on down, and any organization like us. And we'll be there to help you." Organizers also said, at the VFW Post 4658, they host multiple events throughout the year which are open to anyone. If you or a loved one are struggling with thoughts of suicide, 988 can be called 24/7 for help. There are also resources available here for veterans in need of help.
