FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - The Big Fresno Fair had its second weekend of horse racing with eight total races. The Big Fresno Fair's 14-day September horse racing is underway.  Christina Estrada, Interim CEO for the Fresno Fair says for over 100 years, the fair brings the community together to experience horse racing right in their backyard.  "They're loving it. They're enjoying it. And we're seeing it this weekend. I mean, it just proves more and more people, the word is out, and they get it. They thought maybe it was, you know, satellite, but they're like, 'Oh, live horse racing, hey I'm in'," Estrada said. Estrada says if you have not been to the races during the fair, now is your opportunity.  "You know, just come on out straight to the horse races. You're going to see how much fun it is, you know, just to see this live. You usually see Kentucky Derby, you know, TV, but to be here and just watch it live, it's just the different experience," Estrada said. Larry Swartzlander, Director of Racing, says these local races are more casual than most, which people enjoy.  "You want to be able to come out and see it, not be intimidated- like going to a Santa Anita or Delmar. Everybody's got suits on and very stuffy. This is a relaxed atmosphere, good quality horse racing. You get the families, the kids, and it's a good, you know, it's a stepping stone, people see it. Then obviously the best marketing tool is when people go somewhere, they tell other people, and they like it and that's the best way to do it," Swartzlander said. He says the fair has 61 horses racing based out of the Bay Area. This weekend offered five different vendors and face painting. The first 50 people to attend will also get a pair of fair admission tickets.  "Bring your families out. You know, your relatives, you know, see the horses go down the paddock, you know, take a good look at them, have a good time. Don't get caught up in numbers game. You know, if you want to bet, that's fine. But just have a good time," Swartzlander said. The last weekend of September races is Sept. 28 through Sept. 29.  Races during the fair kick-off on October 4.  For more information about tickets and the Big Fresno Fair visit their website.
