(KRON) – San Francisco hotel workers and UNITE HERE Local 2 union members have begun striking at the Grand Hyatt San Francisco Union Square for “painful workloads and wages" and affordable health care, the union announced in a press release on Sunday. Housekeepers, bellhops, cooks, dishwashers, servers, bartenders, and other various jobs are included in the protests. The union is comprised of hotel workers at different companies, including Hilton, Hyatt, Marriott, and Omni.  The strike comes three days after Salesforce’s Dreamforce 2024 conference. Strikers, however, decided not to protest during the conference.  Boy abducted from Oakland at age 6 found alive more than 70 years later Lizzy Tapia, the President of the UNITE HERE Local 2 said, “Salesforce made a commitment to keep Dreamforce in San Francisco for three more years. They stepped up and did the right thing, so we did too. ” “San Francisco can’t recover without a strong hotel industry, and the hotels can’t recover unless we’re cleaning the rooms, cooking the meals, and helping travelers with their bags. We need the hotels to make our jobs sustainable so we can keep doing that work,” said Tapia.  The Westin St. Francis remains open, and we have well-established protocols in place to operate our properties and take care of guests in the event of any impact to staffing. We remain available to meet with the local union negotiating committee to reach an agreement that is fair to all parties. Marriott Jin Ling Xie, a housekeeper at the Hilton San Francisco Union Square for a decade, says their reason for joining the strike is needing two jobs to support their family.  “I love my job, and going on strike wasn’t an easy decision, but it’s what I have to do for my family,” Xie said. “My job at the Hilton isn't enough to pay all the bills, so I'm always worried about the family budget. My kids are in high school, and I don't know how I will pay for their college. Things are hard right now, but I know that when we fight together, we can win a better future.” 2 arrested in Marshalls burglary sting, over $3K of merchandise stolen SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA - SEPTEMBER 12, 2018: A Grand Hyatt Hotel near Union Square, San Francisco, California. (Photo by Robert Alexander/Getty Images) Our colleagues are the heart of our business, and Hyatt has a long history of cooperation with the unions that represent our employees, including UNITE HERE Local 2. We are disappointed that UNITE HERE Local 2 has chosen to strike once again while Hyatt remains willing to continue bargaining in good faith.  We have a history of offering competitive wages and benefits in the market, including comprehensive health care at little to no cost, as well as retirement savings. We have offered competitive wages, health care and retirement benefits at the hotel that is on strike at this time, and colleague benefits and wages remain unchanged as we negotiate a new agreement. We look forward to continuing to negotiate fair contracts and recognize the contributions of Hyatt employees. We have contingency plans in place to minimize impact on hotel operations related to strike activity.  Michael D’Angelo, head of labor relations – Americas, Hyatt During the pandemic, the union said hotels cut staffing and suspended guest services that were never restored. This caused hotel workers to lose hours and increase their workload. Unite Here Local 2 said workers are calling for higher wages, fair staffing and workloads and the reversal of COVID-era cuts.  KRON4 reached out to Hilton for comment on the strike. We did not hear back in time for publication.
