The Park City School Board this week began the process of closing Treasure Mountain Junior High School. The building will become vacant — or at least repurposed — as the reconfiguration includes moving ninth graders to the high school and eighth graders to Ecker Hill Middle School.Randy Upton, the district’s business administrator, explained some of what the closure will entail, and why the conversation needed to start now.“We’ve got to go through the closure process, which has changed quite a bit in the legislative session the last couple of years due to other districts that will be unnamed,” Upton said. “The final decision by the board has to be done before Jan. 1, so that’s why we’re starting the process now.”He said that after the board’s initiating vote, the district would mail out notices to seventh-, eighth- and ninth-graders’ parents about the plans for the school closure.According to a document available with the meeting’s online agenda, the next step for to close the school will be on Oct. 1, when the district intends to notify the public of a meeting at Treasure Mountain on Nov. 12.On Oct. 15 and Nov. 19, the community will have another opportunity to voice their concerns to the board. The vote to close the school for the 2025-26 school year is scheduled for Dec. 17.“Just to be clear, this is to close Treasure, so then we have the option of what to do with Treasure next after the closure,” board member Wendy Crossland clarified. “But this has to happen before you can consider moving forward.”“Yes, this is just stating that it’s no longer going to have students in it as it does now, and that parents, patrons are aware,” Upton said.He added there are a variety of options regarding what to do with the remaining building after it is closed as a school.“There’s programs, renovation, leveling, whatever it is,” Upton said. The post Treasure Mountain Junior High earmarked for closure next school year appeared first on Park Record.
