PORTLAND, Ind. (WANE)— The National Weather service confirmed a tornado touched down in Portland, Jay County on Sunday night. Jay County Jr./Sr. High School was heavily damaged with part of the roof being ripped off. Nearby homes sustained damage as well. The sheriff's department is asking all residents stay inside unless it's an emergency. As of late Sunday night, the Jay County Emergency Management Agency said there were no injuries to report. The National Weather service will have to continue surveying the damage on Monday to determine how strong the tornado was. According to WANE 15 Chief Meteorologist Nicholas Ferreri, who has been in communication with the National Weather Service Northern Indiana Office, "Based on today's conditions, and the actual size and height of the storms as they moved through the county, the damage may have been caused by a landspout. While technically a tornado, landspouts are not as powerful. They are formed as a storm begins to develop and their rotation develops from winds rotating near the ground and not the rotation of the storm itself." Additional severe weather is not expected from the remaining Sunday night scattered rain. This is a developing story and WANE 15 is working to learn more information.
