ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) - Sunday - a prayer for local heroes, a token of gratitude and appreciation for those who dedicate their lives to serving others in our community. Sunday is known for bringing folks together in the name of faith. The Sacred Heart Cathedral in Rochester took the time Sept. 22 to honor local first responders - inviting them and their families to join the community and faith leaders for a special Sunday mass in their honor. The First Responders Mass is an annual endeavor. Bishop Salvatore R. Matano celebrated the day by praying for the safety of Rochester-area first responders. Law enforcement officers, EMTs, firefighters and other first responders risk their lives daily, often responding to "unknowns." In recent years, work to bridge the gap between community and law enforcement has become more prevalent to address the lack of trust becoming more widespread among the general public. ‘If they’re not safe, you’re not safe:’ Law enforcement calls for end to violence against police Law enforcement personnel in recent months have also spoken up about ongoing violence toward officers, including shots being fired directly at officers, and stolen cars being used to ram into them. Sunday's mass was a reminder of those daily dangers endured, serving as a way for the community to honor the work being done 24/7 to protect the public - as well as those lives tragically lost.
