CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Women's flag football has grown in popularity over the past five years. The National Football League reported a 63% increase in women players in 2023 compared to 2019, and the NFL all-girls flag football clinic held on Sunday in Chesterfield County helps support those numbers. There were around 20 girls in attendance, with ages ranging from 10 to 17 years old. The event represented not only the growth in women's football around the country, but right here in Virginia. Emmalyn Taylor is a sophomore, but she’s been playing flag football since the seventh grade.   The Cosby High School student said there’s no flag football team at her school, but she wants to compete against other girls in the area. “It’s always, like, good to get girls and women involved in sports to show that we can also play this game, and we know what we’re doing, and we can play competitively," Taylor said. Taylor said she began to understand football from playing video games with her brother, like Madden.  “It’s a lot of girls out here that do have a lot of good skills, but just didn’t have a venue to actually display those skills," said clinic organizer Tony Jones. This was the third clinic he has organized, with only five girls showing up for the first one. He said he’s not the only one to recognize the growth of women’s flag football.  “The NFL has recognized it; the Olympics has recognized it," Jones said. And he’s right -- the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles will have the first ever girls flag football teams, but Jones’ mind is focused right here in Virginia.  "This is just an opportunity to give them an opportunity here in Richmond," he said.   All this for girls like Emmalyn Taylor. “The future? I’m really hoping I can keep this up through high school, then possibly even through college, then like the USA team, stuff like that," Taylor said. "That would be a good experience for me.”  Jones says he’s hoping Virginia will soon sanction flag football as a high school sport state-wide, giving girls even more opportunity to throw the pigskin.
