BROWNSBURG, Ind. — The Brunswick Corporation is scaling back production at its Mercury Marine facility in Brownsburg. A company spokesperson indicated five salaried employees were laid off at the Mercury Marine facility in Brownsburg in September. The Brunswick Corporation also reported that it has reduced its Brownsburg workforce by about 50 people over the last few months. The company attributed the workforce cutback to reduction in consumer demand in the marine industry. A spokesperson for the business indicated that boat manufacturers have slowed production, which has had a trickle-down effect on companies like Mercury Marine that make boat parts, engines and accessories. The decrease in consumer demand spurred the Brunswick Corporation's decision to change its staffing approach at the Mercury Marine facility in Brownsburg. The company has now implemented a two-shift schedule to replace the three-shift schedule it had been using. The change in philosophy is what partly necessitated the layoffs, according to the company. The Brunswick Corporation's spokesperson also indicated the company's staffing approach at the Mercury Marine facility in Brownsburg could change if the marine industry bounces back. As of this article's publication, no additional information on the layoffs had been made available.
