BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- The first ever "Chopped Challenge" sliced it's way into the Kern County Fair Saturday afternoon at the Frontier Sage, served up by the Blue Zones Project Bakersfield. There were 6 teams facing off Sept. 21 to create the best culinary dish, and the champion of the event says love was her special ingredient. Somewhere between spam fries and strawberry pop tart shakes is the first fair "Chopped Challenge" where 6 teams compete to create the best culinary masterpiece in 30 minutes or less. Joshua Rogers teamed up with Jake Goessman, the freshman from BCHS. He was the kids cooking champ last year. This year he's making a soy, chorizo bowl. "My goal is to pursue my passion in cooking and hopefully, make it far as a business," said Rogers. Competing chefs have to use one of 3 secret ingredients: including eggs, sweet potatoes or jackfruit. Bobby and Ryleigh Griffin are the father-daughter team cooking up a stuffed bell pepper with roasted cauliflower, hummus and a side of pride. Three guest judges taste each dish to see which team will be crowned the first "Chopped Challenge" champion. Rafael Juarez is a pro with a knife, and so is Kira Ewings. "I'm going to be helping chop stuff-up and cook," said Ewings. "Just try and have as much fun as we can." The best deals of October Prime Day Sophomore, Simar Singh is cooking with Jeanelle Jones. They're using jackfruit in a can in their Mexican Salad, but the main ingredient is something else. "We're just going to put our love and our love for cooking into the dish, and hopefully, that'll blossom a nice outcome," said Singh. Chef Brandon Sullivan is making italian food with Halie Burnett, the sophomore out of Ridgeview. She's slicing and inspiring others to do the same. "Just to show my nieces it's okay to get out of your comfort zone and just be yourself," said Burnett. Culinary Arts teacher, Chris Herstam is paired with R.O.C. senior Wyatt Hilliard. He's gonna be the teacher soon. "I really like to cook and everything like that, and I hope to be a chef in the future," said Hilliard. The dishes are judged on presentation, taste and good use of ingredients. At the end of the day, it was the chipotle salad with sauteed sweet potatoes, a dash of jackfruit, on quinoa, topped with avocado and a touch of love. "Whenever I cook, I cook for love. I cook for enjoyment," said Singh. "I don't cook for taste and I feel the feeling is what actually made us win." Simar Singh wins a trophy and you can try her dish on menu at the Mango House for a week.
