FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WNCN) – Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, the Republican candidate for North Carolina governor, made a public appearance in Fayetteville on Saturday evening. He has been embroiled in controversy after a CNN report linked him to a series of past anti-Semitic and sexual remarks made on a porn site. Robinson greeted supporters at the Fayetteville Motor Speedway amid calls from some Republicans to step down from the race. “We are running for governor to work for the people of North Carolina because we are the people of North Carolina,” he said to the crowd during a brief speech. I really felt really good about it,” supporter Susan Daniel said. Daniel, a Fayetteville native, said she is excited to see Robinson paying attention to smaller communities. "I think this is a great win for him, coming out here to a small track like Fayetteville and meeting all the locals,” she said. She hopes to see more of this if he wins in November. This appearance came just days after a CNN report linked Robinson to lewd and sexual comments on a website called Nude Africa. The comments included referring to himself as a “black NAZI!” Robinson has dismissed these reports and said Saturday, he will continue to work while opponents try to drag him down. “We're going to work our butts off to make sure we build an economy in this state that works for everybody,” he said. "I believe it's something that was made up because the Democrats are getting desperate,” supporter Justin Hall said. Daniel said this does not change her decision to vote for him. "We all make mistakes. You live through them, you learn from them and you move forward,” she said. CBS17 also spoke to Fayetteville Mayor Mitch Colvin, a Democrat. He called Robinson’s rhetoric extreme and said a divisive leader is not what North Carolina needs. "As we go to the polls, we're looking for ways to bring our communities together, not tear them apart,” he said. Colvin said he hopes people are paying attention and doing their own research. “Some of these extreme beliefs and the things that he’s said has shown us truly who he is, and so when people tell you who they are, you have to believe them,” he said.
