Riverside City College’s sophomore quarterback Brady Jones set a pair program records Saturday night, passing for 535 yards and seven touchdowns to lead the Tigers to a 70-45 victory over El Camino College in a nonconference game at Murdock Stadium in Torrance. Jones, a Vista Murrieta High School graduate, broke the previous single-game marks of 529 passing yards and six touchdown passes, both of which were set by Jake Retzlaff against Mt. San Jacinto College in 2022. Retzlaff, Centennial High School graduate, now is BYU’s starting quarterback. The record-breaking night by Jones helped the Tigers bounce back from the previous week’s 37-36 loss to Golden West College. Jones did much of his damage during the third quarter, when he completed 13 of 15 passes for 281 yards and four touchdowns as RCC (2-1) outscored El Camino 35-7 in the period to pull away. Those third-quarter touchdown passes were caught by Dominic Cox (57 yards), Kaden Willerford (26 yards), Omar Hammond (32 yards) and Jackson Owens (69). Jones added a 77-yard touchdown pass to Owens in the fourth quarter, which pushed him to both records. Cox caught eight passes for 161 yards and two touchdowns, while Owens finished with three catches for 155 yards and two scores. RCC finished the game with 761 total yards of offense. Hunter Herrera (Citrus Valley) shared the snaps at quarterback for El Camino and completed 16 of 25 passes for 264 yards and three touchdowns. RCC hosts Palomar College in a National-Southern Conference opener Saturday, Sept. 28. CHAFFEY REMAINS UNBEATEN Julian Viramontes completed 17 of 24 passes for 292 yards and tossed three touchdowns as Chaffey College rolled past visiting Santa Monica College 54-7 in a nonconference game Saturday night at Grigsby Field in Rancho Cucamonga. The Panthers are off to a 3-0 start under new coach Ben Buys. Chaffey wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, as Viramontes connected with Nehemiah Harrison for a 65-yard touchdown pass on the first play from scrimmage. The Panthers extended the lead to 20-0 after one quarter. Christian Bozeman scored on a 3-yard run, and Joshua Powell returned an interception 29 yards for another touchdown. Viramontes and Harrison connected again for a 33-yard touchdown right before halftime. Viramontes’ third touchdown pass was an 18-yarder to Corey Cabriales in the third quarter. Harrison finished with six catches for 184 yards, and Cabriales had a game-high seven catches for 84 yards. The Panthers outgained Santa Monica 503-204 during the game. Chaffey hosts LA Southwestern in a nonconference game Saturday Sept. 28 MSJC HOLDS OFF MOORPARK Logan Gonzales tossed an 89-yard touchdown pass to Mateo Licon in the third quarter, the play that proved to be the difference Saturday as Mt. San Jacinto College held on for a 22-16 victory over Moorpark College in a nonconference game at HCN Bank Stadium in Menifee. MSJC (2-1) led 14-3 at halftime, but Moorpark (2-1) scored the first two touchdowns of the second half to surge ahead 16-14. The Eagles took possession at their 11 with 5:03 remaining in the third quarter. On the first play of the drive, Gonzalez connected with Licon for the decisive touchdown. Moorpark had three chances to tie the score or take the lead. The Raiders had to punt the ball away on the first two drives, and MSJC’s defense forced a turnover on downs with 4:05 left in the game. The Eagles were able to run out the remaining time on the clock. Gonzalez finished the game with 333 yards on 30-of-51 passing. Daniel Mendoza led the ground attack for the Eagles, rushing for 73 yards and scoring both of his touchdown in the opening half. Koa Apana caught 12 passes for 133 yards for the Eagles. MSJC hosts Fullerton College in a National-Southern Conference opener Saturday, Sept. 28. C-M-S PREVAILS IN OREGON Justin Edwards ran for 125 yards on 31 carries and also scored a touchdown as Claremont-Mudd-Scripps cruised to a 27-17 victory over George Fox University in a nonconference game Saturday at Stoffer Family Stadium in Newberg, Ore. C-M-S (2-0) took the lead in the first quarter, when Rich Brutto kicked a 26-yard field goal, and Walter Kuhlenkamp connected with Mason Cotton for a 74-yard touchdown. George Fox (2-1) got onto the scoreboard with a field goal, but the Stags answered twice before halftime to extend their lead to 24-3. Jacob O’Connell returned an interception 20 yards for one score, and Edwards capped a 12-play drive with a 6-yard touchdown run. Brutto added a 51-yard field goal during the third quarter. C-M-S travels to Thousand Oaks to play Cal Lutheran University in a SCIAC opener Saturday, Sept. 28. La Verne falls in double overtime Willisone Johnson scored the decisive touchdown, a 3-yard scoring run in double overtime, as University of Puget Sound outlasted University of La Verne 49-41 in a nonconference game Saturday at Ortmayer Stadium in La Verne. La Verne (0-2) forced overtime when Brian Rudden tossed a 31-yard touchdown pass to Jimmy Rumsey with 1:22 remaining in regulation. The teams traded field goals during the first overtime period. Puget Sound (1-2) needed only two plays to find the end zone in the second session, as Henry Hernandez set up Johnson’s touchdown with a 22-yard run. The Loggers added the 2-point conversion to go up 49-41. La Verne’s attempt to extend the game got off to a strong start, as Rudden found Rumsey for a 15-yard completion on the first play. However, a 6-yard loss on the ensuing play and three straight incomplete passes brought the game to an end. Rudden threw for 283 yards and three touchdowns, and Rumsey caught  six passes for 144 yards and three touchdowns. Arthur McCown led La Verne’s ground attack with 108 yards. Mason Binning passed foe 325 yards and three touchdown to lead Puget Sound. Hernandez finished with 204 yards and two touchdowns on 36 carries, and Joe Gallagher had nine catches for 146 yards and two touchdowns. La Verne hosts Pomona-Pitzer in a SCIAC opener Saturday, Sept. 28. PACIFIC PULLS AWAY FROM POMONA-PITZER Braeden Titus completed 25 of 34 passes for 370 yards and threw four touchdown passes as Pacific University pulled away for the 45-14 win over Pomona-Pitzer in a nonconference game Saturday at Hanson Stadium in Forest Grove, Ore. Pacific (2-1) grabbed a double-digit lead in the opening period, but Pomona-Pitzer (1-1) cut the deficit to 17-14 after touchdown runs by Grady Russo (1 yard) and Brennan Dragomer (24 yards) in the second quarter. Titus connected with Josiah Chaffin on a 4-yard touchdown right before halftime, and Pacific then outscored the Sagehens 21-0 in the second half to secure the victory. Pomona-Pitzer heads to University of La Verne for a SCIAC opener Saturday, Sept. 28. REDLANDS ROUTED IN OREGON Luke McNabb ran for three touchdowns and also tossed a touchdown pass as Linfield University routed University of Redlands 45-0 in a nonconference game at Maxwell Field in McMinnville, Ore. Linfield (2-1) outgained the Bulldogs 463-126 in the game. Chase Hunter and Laure Williams had interceptions for Redlands on the defensive side. Redlands (0-2) will host Chapman University in a SCIAC opener Saturday, Sept. 28. SBVC SKID HITS DOUBLE FIGURES San Bernardino Valley College dropped its 10th consecutive game, as the Wolverines were thumped by visiting Bakersfield College on in a nonconference game Saturday. David Smith and Jalen Hankins each ran for a pair of touchdowns to lead the way for the Renegades. SBVC (0-2) finished with 3 yards of total offense and failed to reach the end zone for the second straight game. The Wolverines have been outscored 130-0 this season. Bakersfield (2-1) held a 38-0 lead after the opening quarter. SBVC travels to Long Beach City College for a National-Central Conference opener Saturday, Sept. 28.
