DJT’s othering puts real people in real danger Manhattan: Just when you think we have finally reached the bottom of Donald Trump’s vileness, he surprises us by digging deeper into the foundation of depravity on which his campaign stands. Although the disgusting accusations he raised against Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio (photo) were immediately debunked, Trump doubled down. This lie, even in the shadow of all he has told, feels like we have reached the putrid layers of the MAGA story. Trump and his robotic, utterly unlikable running mate JD Vance knew these were lies. The goal was to appeal to the lowest denominator of American society: the implicit biases and dormant racist fear of “others” that live deep within all of us. They don’t need to find the “missing pets” of Springfield because all they really need is the community’s sudden realization that people who don’t look like them are suddenly all around, “invading” their communities. This is propaganda at its most effective. The purpose was to ignite panic within our innately suspicious hearts that these new people living in our communities are savages and cannibals to be terrified of, rejected and attacked. The only solution is his promise of a future deportation force that will hunt these “invaders” down. I fear for the safety of the Haitian community, and any other immigrant community, because it’s only a matter of days before they train their hateful gaze on us. Trump couldn’t care less if people get hurt as long as he keeps his morally challenged followers enthusiastically engaged by feeding them the daily diet of raw hate and grievances that sustains them. As long as there’s a brown-skinned bogeyman he can point at and blame for everything, that is what’s wrong with their lives. Geidy Perez Storch Lose-lose Babylon, L.I.: I am afraid of the violence if Trump wins because so many people hate him. I am afraid of the violence if Trump does not win because so many people love him. Laura Marie Bowman By his hand East Meadow, L.I.: Prior to his hate-filled, lie-fest rally at Nassau Coliseum, Trump promised to restore SALT deductions. Don’t believe him. He’s just pandering for your votes. I’m sure that his memory-deficient MAGA cultists have forgotten that Trump placed the cap on SALT deductions with the help of congressional Republicans. Richard Skibins Non-answers High Bridge, N.J.: Where’s the beef? That tired phrase describes Kamala Harris’s recent 11-minute TV interview in Philadelphia. She answered none of the questions, providing us with the usual meaningless scraps. Namely, that she was middle-class, her family took pride in their lawn, she likes to cook and loves family gatherings. And there’s a reason for her evasive answers. Kamala’s simply not capable of an appropriate response because she’s not managerially qualified for the position of president. She and her handlers realize her inadequacy. Consequently, she’s been invisible, having consented to only three mostly powder-puff interviews in two months. Just think: In 30 years, what exactly has she done of consequence to make this country better? A mediocre attorney general, a radical senator and a non-contributing vice president. That’s what the record shows. Trump had four successful years, per Americans of all demographics, surveys show. Dennis Ferrere Don’t be fooled Massapequa Park, L.I.: I’m a proud retired Teamster who is going to vote for Vice President Harris. I’m ashamed of my fellow Teamsters who are thinking of casting their ballots for that dirtbag traitor who has never done anything for the working people of America. Think it through, brothers, before you vote. Our democracy is at stake here! Frank Mullahey Lopsided lie detectors Lafayette, La.: Kudos to the Daily News for having the guts to print opposing perspectives on who won the presidential debate. For those in the majority who feel that the serial-lying Harris won, I challenge them with the news that the ABC moderators admitted that they were only going to fact-check Trump. Does this change your perspective? If a fair observer doesn’t recalibrate their debate scorecards on this bombshell news, it only illustrates extreme bias. Moreover, there’s likely not going to be another debate. But if there was, to remove any suspicion, is it asking too much that the normally word-salad Harris not wear earrings that closely resemble a state-of-the-art electronic listening device? Neil Tuttle Must-watch Manhattan: To all you Trumpers out there: Watch the HBO documentary “Stopping the Steal,” then explain to me how you can still vote for Trump in November. And if you say the film must have been made by left-wing Democrats, look at the people interviewed in it. They were all Republicans — state legislators, secretaries of state, officials overseeing the 2020 election, White House aides, MAGA supporters and Trump himself. If you didn’t realize it before, you must have learned from the film that Trump lacks character, will twist the truth to fit his needs and is unfit to be the leader of this country. Chana Schwartz Grammar-challenged Brooklyn: Being a Democrat, I seldom watch or listen to anything having to do with Trump. However, my youngest brother asked me a good question: Can Donald Trump read? My brother, who has several learning disabilities and is learning to read and write after suffering a stroke, likes him because he says Trump knows how to get the pretty ladies and he’s tough. I’ve read him some of Trump’s quotes from the newspaper that Trump had posted on the internet, pointing out his misspellings and all, and even my brother doesn’t believe someone who was a president would write things like that. But can he read? Mary Whitaker Can’t give him up Austin, Texas: Why do nearly all Republicans continue to support Donald Trump, despite all his lies, conspiracy theories, egregious acts and felony convictions? Former Republican political analyst Matthew Dowd compares what’s happening with Republican acquiescence to Trump to someone in an abusive relationship who continues to allow themselves to be abused because they don’t see an alternative. Richard Cherwitz People power Brooklyn: Voicer Rob Cullen is correct. The people should be voting on major issues like assault weapons, reproductive rights, the Electoral College, term limits and real ethics for the Supreme Court. The biggest issue we need to vote on is public financing of campaigns for elections. This is where it all starts to go wrong. It has corrupted our government. Why is this not a major issue to be discussed in the debates? Money is power, and power corrupts. Greg Ahl Compartmentalized Flushing: If the popular vote was to decide elections in the U.S.A., think of the event of a close vote. Say 60 million for the Democrat and 60 million plus one for the Republican. Where do we start the recount looking for the correct count? Would it be Alaska, or perhaps Pennsylvania or Florida? At least with state-by-state voting, the close calls may come down to one or two states, but with no need to count results in the other 48 or 49 states. Let’s keep it this way instead of maybe having to recount 120 million votes looking for one. Ben Jordon Container calamity Melbourne, Australia: So, no more Tupperware (“Cold reality for Tupperware: Declining sales and Chapter 11,” Sept. 19). Another familiar childhood memory is fading. There are a few pieces in the cupboard, not used as often now with reliable refrigeration and the almost instant availability of most foods. It has gone the way of Blockbuster and Borders bookstores, once very successful but staying the same when the world moved on. The other, seemingly unmentioned, reason for its demise was its quality. A well-made product that is still usable and therefore doesn’t need to be replaced every few years. Few other products will last the distance as planned obsolescence becomes so common. Vale, Tupperware, and your parties. Dennis Fitzgerald Test the theory Smithtown, L.I.: To Voicer Lonnie Bond: Leonard Greene came to the conclusion that Beyoncé was ignored for a Country Music Awards nomination because she is Black. In his (and possibly your) mind, it could be for no other possible reason. This is ridiculous, divisive and intimidating. Maybe you and he should be doing a little research before responding. There have been many Black artists nominated for CMA awards (including Ray Charles), and some like Charlie Pride and Tracy Chapman who have won. Andrew Ross
