SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - The 33rd Ubora award means excellence and the 15th Ahadi youth award means promise. The African Hall Committee presented the Ahadi Youth award Saturday night to 18 year old Jackson Counsel-Watkins. This award is given to an African American student who excels in both academics and service to the Greater Springfield Community. Jackson held a GPA of 4.0 at Central High School where she co-founded the schools first Black Student Union. In this role she was able to foster an environment of inclusivity and empowerment for her peers. Jackson Counsel-Watkins, an Honoree told 22News, "I feel like everybody should have a space for themselves and a space for them to become comfortable and to make friends, make relationships because that's how I've been able to be here and to get this recognition by the relationships I've made and the people that I've met and the people that have inspired me." Social justice advocate Rosemary Tracy Woods was also awarded with the 33rd Ubora Award which is given to an African American adult who has shown excellence in education, science, humanities or the arts.
