ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A California-based energy company, with roots already in New Mexico, announced they are expanding their footprint in the state even more. The move is expected to bring jobs and an economic impact of hundreds of millions of dollars to the state. "New Mexico has positioned itself well under the leadership of Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham to be at the tip of the spear when it comes to energy-related companies," said Economic Development Division Director Mark Roper. The company came to the state back in 2020 and set up shop with its first facility out of Mesa Del Sol. Now, they're looking to add two more facilities to the Albuquerque location and one at Los Alamos National Lab. What kinds of natural disasters happen in New Mexico? "This new expansion will virtually double their employees to over an excess of 200 employees," Roper said. "As part of this expansion, Kairos is going to invest 269 million dollars." One of those new developments will be a salt production facility in Albuquerque, responsible for producing coolant for a demonstration nuclear reactor out in Tennessee. The other Albuquerque facility will work to optimize fuel manufacturing techniques to be used for the third and final building, which will be located at Los Alamos National Lab. That building will manufacture pebble fuel for the Tennessee reactor. "We're excited about the project," Roper explained. "Not only from the economic development and a fiscal impact standpoint, this is cutting edge technology." However, the state said they've already invested in clean energy companies, such as Maxeon Solar. "We are very well positioned to be an energy state and a green energy state, and we've embraced them all," Roper added. Officials expect the economic impact of the expansion to be about $478 million over the next ten years and expected to bring 100 jobs to the state. The company is looking for engineers, technicians, and operators to fill those positions. Officials say those jobs come with an average salary of about $100,000. The company said they are hosting a hiring event on Oct. 4.
