Hot stretch ends with warmest September day in nine years Summer finishes on a high note! A typical September sees two days of 90º+ high temperatures in Indianapolis. Saturday marked the fourth day with a high of 94º. That is only two degrees shy of the 96º record high set in 2010. Saturday also marked the warmest September day in nine years, reaching 94º on September 4, 2015. This has a likely chance of being the last 90º+ day of the year, as a pattern shift begins Sunday. The average last day of the 90s is September 1st. Drought/dry September continues for Indy While many spots got a healthy drink of water on Friday evening, the drought continues in our region. Indianapolis officially still has only 0.05" of rain under its belt at the airport. That's 2.15" below normal. If September ended now, it would be the driest ever. To date (September 1-21), it's the 5th driest September on record. Luckily, we'll attempt to close the gap with upcoming rain chances. Timing Sunday's rain chances Clouds will be on the rise Saturday evening/overnight ahead of the rain. In terms of timing, our far western counties in the Wabash Valley will start to see rain closer to daybreak. The rain will move east through the morning. The activity should diminish in coverage and become widely scattered thanks to the dry air in our atmosphere. Nonetheless, bring rain gear if you'll be tailgating for the Colts vs. Bears game at Lucas Oil Stadium. This will be the best widespread rain chance Central Indiana has seen in a few weeks. Expect temperatures in the upper 70s and lower 80s throughout the day, still above normal for this time of the year. Cold front brings changes, more rain With an approaching cold front and upper-level ridge, temperatures will gradually fall with more rain chances to open the work week. Rain will continue Monday and Tuesday on a scattered basis. Dry hours are promised with temperatures falling to more late-September levels in the 70s for highs. We'll begin to dry out by midweek but we'll be watching to see how a tropical cyclone acts in the Caribbean and its path. As it moves northward, it could bring some rain chances again by next weekend but those chances are very low at this point. When all is said and done, we'll receive some decent rains in spots but not enough to put a significant dent in our ongoing drought.
