HONOLULU (KHON2) -- When you were 10 years old did you know what you wanted to be when you grew up? The University of Hawaii Medical School hosted young students over the past week to hopefully put a career in the medical field on their radar. Get Hawaii's latest morning news delivered to your inbox, sign up for News 2 You Sixth graders from Honowai Elementary School had a first-hand look at what it's like to be a medical student. Students learned about different health topics from the effects of nicotine to learning about heart pressure, dials and needles. Mayor Blangiardi participates in 10th anniversary of ALS Ice Bucket Challenge Close to 100 students got a feel of college classes to help plant the seed for possible future doctors, nurses or any other medical professional. "We know role modeling is really critical and for any young person, child, whatever, just having that ability to say 'wow, okay that person could be me someday,'" said Dr. Lee Buenconsejo-Lum, Associate Dean of JABSOM. Doctor Buenconsejo-Lum estimated about a third of the current incoming class visited the school in one of these "Pathway Programs." JABSOM usually hosts these events for high school students, so it's the first time hosting students so young. If everything works out, it won't be the last. UH received funding from the state legislature, hopefully allowing it to hire more staff to host more students. We believe in our young people. We believe in our schools, so these types of partnerships with the Department of Education is really important for all of Hawaii's workforce. Dr. Lee Buenconsejo-Lum, Associate Dean of JABSOM "I always wanted to be some sort of engineer or architect. It definitely got me to look further at health and stuff," said sixth grader, Robindehl Joachim. Check out what's going on around the nation on our National News page "This is achievable. You can be a doctor one day or you can be a business owner in a school or be a teacher. Just give them the confidence to just think about, 'Hey, I could do this as possible. Like this person went to my school. This is possible for me,'" said Malia Ignacio, teacher.
