A class of 10 individuals and two teams were welcomed into the Mentor Sports Hall of Fame last week. Coach Joe Corrigan (gymnastics), Coach James Funk (football, basketball) and Coach Chris Parsons (football, basketball and golf) join former student-athletes Kent Berger (football, basketball), Tom Brew (football), Eddie Daugherty (football, track), Allison Golic (softball), Kristen Kirby (cheerleading, gymnastics), Emma Lane (track) and Pam Quigney (tennis, basketball, softball) as individual inductees. Mentor’s 2003-2004 girls basketball team and the 2013 softball team were also inducted into the hall of fame. The induction was held Sept. 19 at Mentor’s Fine Arts Center, followed by a reception at St. John Vianney’s social hall afterward. • Golic (Class of 2016) led Mentor’s softball team to the 2013 state final four and set a school record with 234 strikeouts in a season. • The 2013 softball team became the first in program history to advance to the final four under Coach Emily Strobel. • Berger (Class of 2014) was a member of the 2013 state runner-up football team and 2012 state final four football team — earning All-Ohio status — as well as a member of the 2013 state championshp basketball team. • Quigney (Class of 2007) earned 10 varsity letters in three sports, scoring 1,038 points in her four-year varsity career in basketball. • Corrigan coached Mentor’s 2012 and 2015 state runner-up gymnastic teams and coached 41 individual state-qualifiers. • The 2003-2004 girls basketball team, led by coach Mark Chicone, went 24-2, were league champions and Division I regional runner-up. • Kirby (Class of 2000) was a four-time state-qualifier in gymnastics and a state-placer. She was a four-time regional qualifier in track and also stood out in cheerleading. She earned 10 varsity letters. • Parsons coached boys basketball for 12 years and boys golf for 14 years. He was also Ridge junior high athletic director for eight years. • Brew (Class of 2003) was a three-year letterwinner in football and helped lead the Cardinals to their first elite eight appearance. • Funk coached football for 35 years and boys basketball for 26 years. He was defensive coordinator for four state runner-up football teams. • Daugherty (Class of 2015) Was an All-Oho football player at Mentor, setting a record for the most receptions (18) in a state championship game. He was also a two-time state-qualifier in track. • Lane (Class of 2017) was a four-year letterwinner in track and a five-time All-Ohio athlete in individual events and was part of six school records.
