ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — When the weather gets dicey, sometimes, one of the things that can happen is losing power. One annoyance of having to deal with a power outage is worrying about the food in your refrigerator and freezer. What if I told you that there was a way to give you an idea about the freshness of food? Well, you're in luck! This is what we call the quarter test. Let's break down the steps! Before a severe weather event, you will want to fill a cup with water all the way to the top and then set it in your freezer. Once the water is frozen in the cup, put a quarter (or any kind of coin) on top of the frozen water and put it back in the freezer. Once the power is restored after losing it, take the cup out of the freezer and see where the quarter is. If the coin is still at the top, this indicates that the power wasn't out for too long, meaning that your food should be in good shape. If you take the cup and the quarter is at the bottom of the cup, the power must have been out for a long duration of time, meaning that your food will not be in good condition. Okay, so now say the quarter is somewhere in the middle when taken out of the freezer. The food within your freezer may be okay but the food in your refrigerator may need to be tossed out. It's still important to check the freshness of the products just to be sure.
