PLAINSBORO — After just having picked up their first wins Thursday, the West Windsor-Plainsboro High North and Hamilton High West varsity boys’ soccer teams found themselves battling near the top of the Colonial Valley Conference Valley Division Saturday. In fact, when the Northern Knights pulled out a 3-2 victory over the Hornets, it moved second-year head coach Venkat Ramaprasad’s team into first place in the newly configured division. Junior attacker Khalil Osman’s breakaway goal off a lead pass from senior midfielder Gideon Lubin with just under three minutes remaining gave the home team their second straight win. The assist capped a big day for Lubin, who played a part in each of his team’s goals, while making his mark all over the field. “Sometimes when we need to apply more pressure, I use my possession skills,” said Lubin, whose aggressive play kept the Hornets backtracking more than they would have liked. “We knew we were a better team than we’d shown in our first five games. The other night, something clicked with us.” Lubin’s role on this day was very important since WW-P North was without junior midfielder/forward Jacob Thinji. Thinji was recovering from an injury after helping the Northern Knights defeat WW-P South, 1-0, Thursday night. “We got a taste of that winning feeling in these last two games,” Lubin said. “Now we want to keep it going.” Lubin and his teammates showed that desire midway through the first half when Lubin led his classmate Sid Somadathan for the game’s first score as WW-P North caught Hamilton West’s defense sleeping, one game after defeating Nottingham, 2-1, at Al Cowell Field in Veterans Park for its first victory. No worries. The Hornets came out of halftime and took advantage of a failed clear when senior forward Ayomide Talabi launched a feed from his classmate Ben Shaffer high into the net from about 29 yards out to knot the game, 1-1, with 38:47 to go. “I was trying to bring some intensity because we didn’t come out the way we wanted to in the first half,” the 6-foot-3 Talabi said. The visitors’ play was much more admirable in the second half, but Lubin continued to be a thorn in their sides. With 25:12 left, he tracked down a long serve from junior midfielder Aadhya Gangappa, then cut back to beat two backline players for his third goal of the season, which ties Thinji for the team lead. Ten minutes later, Hornets’ senior midfielder Mark Gavrish headed home a try by his classmate Alex Garcia Cruz to tie the score, 2-2. But no further connections were forthcoming for third-year head coach Simon Lapointe’s squad. “What we need to do better is put the ball in the back of the net,” said Talabi, whose team has six goals in seven games. “We’ve been struggling with it since Day One.” With three divisional points already under their belts after playing to a scoreless tie with WW-P South Sept. 12, Hamilton West remains in the Valley Division hunt. It just needs to find a scoring touch a little more like WW-P North, which has 10 goals in seven games.
