HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Young entrepreneurs gathered at Dorey Park Farmers Market Saturday, Sept. 21 to showcase their small businesses during a special Children's Entrepreneur Market. Over 40 kids participated -- some as young as five years old -- setting up shop and running their businesses for the day. Among them were 11-year-olds Alex Bartlett and Adelaide Dorfman, who introduced their venture, “Dips and Designs.” “Our socks might smell bad, but our donuts sure don’t!” they said, calling the chant their business motto. This event is part of a national program that has taught over 10,000 children the fundamentals of entrepreneurship and leadership. “This is a great opportunity in a low-risk environment to have some real-life learning,” said market manager Jeni Mauney. She said the program started in Utah in 2017, and has now had markets in 24 states. Saturday was the first event in Virginia. “They’re getting character development, they're getting just skills for life as they learn about financial literacy and think about what they want to sell,” Mauney said. “They’re talking to customers, looking an adult in the face.” The Dips and Design owners said they learned a lot. “We learned we have to talk to people more, and like interact with them to try to sell stuff," Bartlett said. "And also, have patience," Dorfman added. The parents were equally enthusiastic about the experience. “This is not like your typical setup lemonade stand in your driveway," said Adelaide's mom Lindy Dorfman. "It is an opportunity at a very young age to run a real business; I think it’s invaluable.” There will be another market on October 19th.
