NORFOLK, Va.(WAVY) -- A permanent memorial along West Charlotte Street in Downtown Norfolk honors the life of "daughter, writer, friend and reporter" Sierra Jenkins. The 25-year-old Virginian Pilot reporter was shot and killed outside of Chicho's Backstage on Granby Street mid-March 2022.  On Saturday morning, the Jenkins family, friends and City of Norfolk leaders dedicated the memorial stone and bench at Flatiron Park. The bench shares the park with the Norfolk 17 Memorial and Overlooks the original Virginian Pilot building.  "It's very appropriate that it's here with a wall that represents education for Black people and people of color," said Betty Adams-Brown, Jenkins Great-Grandmom. "It is so appropriate that someone who was a teacher, who was trying to help people and report on education is here beside the wall that represents just that, with the dates [on the wall] there and the good things to get better. They're not fixed, but they're better!" Virginian-Pilot reporter killed in quintuple shooting in Norfolk  "It's going to be a help to all of us. To [be able] come here when we just don't have words to say. That's what I wanted, a space for us to come to remember her, to lighten the load a little," said Moniquekia Thompson, Jenkins' mom during the ceremony surrounded by her family, faith leader, friends and Police Chief Mark Talbot. Pamela Jenkins, Sierra's grandmother, credits Mayor Kenny Alexander and Councilwoman Danica Royster for being influential in making the permanent memorial possible.  "Remember Sierra for her kindness, her dedication and commitment," said Mayor Alexander during his opening statements.  Royster adding, "We honor her memory. We honor her legacy and we honor the foundation that her family and friends built into her." Scholarship fund set up in memory of Virginian-Pilot reporter killed in March 2022 quintuple shooting "It was my honor to work with Sierra on the motions of the people she was learning to become a newspaper reporter," said her editor Virginian Pilot, Brian Root.  Cameron Bertrand, a gun violence survivor was invited to speak to the crowd. Jenkins was scheduled to interview Bertrand ahead to her death.  "She was the person that you would want in your corner. She wanted everyone to win," said Thompson. "We're not done, we're just getting started. It is our charge! She is not here for a reason and now it's time to her to [continue] work." Cousin of journalist killed in Norfolk shooting launches movement in her honor Adams-Brown tells 10 On Your Side when she looks at the memorial she feels a sense of "loss." "Not just loss for me, but loss for this area, loss for the world, said Adams-Brown. Because this young lady was going to write books. She was going to teach people. She would be up late at night sometimes talking to families that had lost a child, and then she would get up and be at work on time the next day. This is a young lady that halfway was never enough. Three quarters of the way was never enough. She always had to be 100% and she was." Charges against man accused in fatal Granby Street shooting withdrawn after witnesses failed to appear in court. The shooting left 24-year-old Marquel Andrews, 25-year-old Devon “Malik” Harris and Jenkins dead. The shooting is still considered unsolved.  Learn more about the Sierra Jenkins Scholarship Fund here.
