LACOMBE, La. (WGNO) — Over the years, the St. Tammany Parish Animal Shelter has taken dozens of animals. On the brink of euthanasia becoming necessary, a call to the community saved so many animals from being put down. "To see people from all walks of life come here to help out companion animals, it was really awesome. I think we are down to 123 dogs in the shelter,” said Animal Control Supervisor in the St. Tammany Parish Department of Animal Services Rob Bremer. Bremer gets emotional realizing in just a short period over 160 pets were either fostered or adopted. NOPD investigates three Friday, Saturday shootings "So we are three dogs away from being under our dog capacity. Which is unprecedented, we haven't been under our dog compacity in 3 years," said Bremer. One animal adoptee says when it comes to animal shelters, they'll always have a special place in the community's hearts. After adding another cat to her family, she says the love an animal gives you is unmatched. "Undivided attention and affection. I feel like a human only a pet can. We as a community needed to band together to save all the pets that were relocated because of the hurricane. I feel we needed to get them before they got euthanized," said animal adoptee Yvonne. However, Bremer believes the momentum has to keep going. He explains as a country we have to start addressing these issues on the front end of the problem. Finding out why pet owners are giving up their animals. Reward expiring soon in unsolved murders of 3 brothers "Seeing what their issues are, what is causing them to surrender their animals to us. Is it a landlord issue or, an affordability thing? Spay and neutering, we need to be able to fix animals to prevent the overpopulation," said Bremer. Bremer says his entire staff is thankful but is not out of the woods yet, urging people to come bond with a furry friend. All animals can be seen on the St. Tammany Parish government website.
