RODANTHE, N.C. (WNCN) – Water officials are urging people to stay away from the ocean near the North Carolina coast after an onslaught of storms has caused a pair of homes to collapse over 24 hours in the Outer Banks. According to the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, the National Park Service received a dispatch call at around 9:18 p.m. Friday from Dare County regarding a house collapse at 23009 G A Kohler Court in Rodanthe. (Courtesy: Cape Hatteras National Seashore) Law enforcement rangers arrived on scene and confirmed the unoccupied, one-story house had “collapsed and apparently washed out into the ocean before the bulk of it returned to the beach,” Seashore officials said. This was the same residence that sustained damages as a result of a house collapse that occurred earlier in the day at 23001 G A Kohler Court. High surf wipes out Pea Island dunes on North Carolina’s Outer Banks “At the north end of Rodanthe and for miles to the south, the Seashore urges visitors to stay out of the water and wear hard-soled shoes when walking on the beach to avoid injuries from hazardous floating debris and nail-ridden wooden debris,” according to a news release from the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Officials also said temporary beach closures may be necessary due to potentially dangerous debris on the beach and in the water to the north and south of the collapse site. This damage comes days after a coastal low brought heavy rain to the North Carolina coast. Rodanthe is under a coastal flood advisory through Monday afternoon. This marks the ninth house collapse on Seashore beaches over the last four years.
