Second Harvest hosts consecutive distribution drives for storm victims

HOUMA, La. (WGNO) — Over the span of two days, Second Harvest Food Bank filled the pantries of about 1,200 families in Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes.
“[Hurricane] Francine hit the bayou, and Second Harvest is committed to all of south Louisiana, and that includes the bayou, and so that's why we're down here for a second day,” said John Sillars, the chief strategy officer for Second Harvest Food Bank.
The distribution drive generated quite the crowd in Houma as hundreds waited in line to get their vehicles stocked with food and supplies.

WGNO’s Jordan Lippincott asked one family, “How long have you all been waiting?” Dinah Lovell responded, “For 4 hours.”
It may take a full tank of gas to attend, but some say it's easy to pass the time.
“We cut up, we laugh, joke around,” said donations recipient Leroy Boudwin. “We just have fun because I know it takes forever, but at least we get help.”
Second Harvest received help from Rouses Market, Catholic Charities and other organizations.
“If it weren't for them, we wouldn't be able to pull this off, because this is a huge endeavor,” Sillars said. “We're feeding over 600 families here.”
The work doesn't go unnoticed.

“Without this help in our community, I mean, people just come out the woodworks to help us, and we're very appreciative,” said Boudwin.
Lovell added, “Thank you very much for helping out our community.”
Those who were not able to attend are encouraged to visit no-hunger.org for a list of nearby food pantries.
