Elkhorn's Kayd Matthews (2) looks to throw the football as the Waverly defense closes in on him. (Jeff Motz/KFOR Sports)WAVERLY–(KFOR Sept. 20)–The Waverly football team got a boost from its defense and special teams on Friday night that helped them shut down Elkhorn’s offense and capitalize on some opportunities. The Class B No. 6 Vikings got a break early from the special teams to score early and held off the No. 9 Antlers for a 28-0 victory at Viking Stadium, in a game heard on KFOR. Waverly (2-2) open the game with a three-and-out situation.  But Elkhorn’s Elliot Beister botched the punt, allowing the Viking special teams to recover the ball at the Antler 37-yard line.  Six plays later, running back Cooper Wittler scored on a 6-yard touchdown run to put Waverly up 7-0 with 8:27 left in the first quarter. Over the remainder of the first quarter and second quarter, Waverly’s defense limited any sort of progress Elkhorn was trying to make.  Following the initial Viking touchdown, the Antlers drove to the Waverly 20-yard line before Gavin McMillan intercepted a Kayd Matthews pass.  Elkhorn later would turn the ball over on downs. Waverly’s next scoring drive came with 53 seconds left before halftime, after Wittler scored on a 10-yard touchdown run to extend the lead at 14-0. The Viking special teams came through again to start the third quarter.  Elkhorn fumbled on the opening kickoff that led to Waverly recovering the football.  Wittler later scored on a one-yard run with 7:23 to play in the quarter and the Viking lead increased to 21-0. Senior quarterback Carter McMillan then threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Derek Sutter with 5:46 left in the game to seal the win for Waverly. Elkhorn fell to 2-2 on the campaign and will play Omaha Skutt next week.  Waverly travels to Union Bank Stadium next Friday night to play Lincoln Standing Bear.
