INDIANAPOLIS — On Friday, a group of nearly 100 volunteers came together to help build the interior and exterior walls of Cahill’s new family home. “I want people to understand, this house wasn’t being given to me, said Dana Cahill, Habitat for Humanity. “I will be paying for it. It’s an affordable mortgage. It’s just not given to me. I feel like a lot of people misunderstand that. They think I won the lottery on the house but I have worked hard to make this happen.” This has been a long-awaited dream for Cahill and her boys and Greater Indy Habitat for Humanity is helping to make it all happen.  “I think it's important I do something every day for someone else,” said Jim Dillard, one of the volunteers. “If I don't, I have wasted a day!” “It’s an incredible feeling to see someone achieve their goal and when it's something like a home, something they will have in their family for as long as they want, it really is a life-changing opportunity,” said Abri Hochstetler, the VP of Communications at Greater Indy Habitat for Humanity. “It is an honor and a gift to help walk alongside that family as they achieve that goal.” The goal of Habitat’s homeownership program is to help people who never thought they could own a home make it possible. “Habitat provides an opportunity for families to purchase a home who may not be able to,” Hochstetler said. “We provide an affordable mortgage and all of the training and preparations so they can be successful in their home.” But it took a lot of people and organizations to get here including partnerships, sponsorships, and of course the amazing volunteers like 93-year-old Jim Dillard. “Just the feeling you get when a house goes up that you had a part in, it just makes you feel so good,” he said. Now after many hours of hard work, Cahill’s home is one step closer to being complete. “I feel like there really are still good people in the world,” she said. “It’s hard to remember that sometimes. I feel really special that all of these people came out to help me.” And although it took a long time to get here with many ups and downs along the way including a journey to sobriety, Cahill is more than proud to start a new life with her family here. “It’s been a rough road for me, you know? Cahill said. “I have crawled out of some pretty dark places. It’s just a really good feeling… This is the one puzzle piece that I was missing for my house and family to be complete. I am so excited.” To learn more about Greater Indy Habitat for Humanity and the homeownership program, click here. To donate, click here.
