SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- The unemployment rate for San Diego is out and academics note it’s higher than the 4.2% for the national average, but lower than the California statewide unemployment rate of 5.3%. “Historically 5% is pretty good,” said Professor Stephen Conroy from University of San Diego. That’s right at 5% San Diego County is in a healthy spot, but while jobs are available, the quality of those jobs can be tough. “Retail, restaurant, I was a preschool teacher for a little bit. So, I kind of bounced around,” said Gabrielle Wilson, a resident of Ocean Beach. Gabrielle Wilson studied international conflict resolution at Point Loma Nazarene University, and while she has been able to get work, it’s not really what she’s looking for in a career. "San Diego is such a highly populated early 20s post-college amount of people, I think entry level has been really hard,” Wilson said. Conroy says employment from a 1,000-foot view is starting to look up. "The 5% figure may sound a little daunting, but we actually added net new jobs in August for the first time in a while,” Conroy said. Now with the stock market hitting all-time record highs, inflation down and the interest rates dropping, the economy is showing new life and in an almost imperceptible way Wilson feels it too. Conroy says San Diego, with its perfect climate and low crime rate, is attracting some of the biggest tech businesses in the world, so more jobs are most likely on the way. “We are the best kept secret, but the secret is kind of out,” Conroy said.
