RIVERSIDE — Winning ugly is still winning. Despite a brawl nearly breaking out following the final play, the Norte Vista football team held on for a 28-27 nonleague victory over Granite Hills on Friday night. “We played like crap,” Norte Vista coach Ken Batdorf said. “Have you ever seen anything like that at the end of a game?” Dreadie Allain had 30 carries for a game-high 149 yards and a fourth-quarter touchdown as Norte Vista (5-0 overall) stayed unbeaten. Jy’Den Henderson added 11 carries for 78 rushing yards and two touchdowns for the Braves, who dominated the line of scrimmage with 263 rushing yards. Norte Vista produced a 12-play drive to kill more than 9 minutes of the first quarter, taking the lead on a 3-yard run from Henderson. Granite Hills got its passing game going on its second possession and after a 10-yard completion to move the chains, Aamir Sneed hurled it down the left sideline to Nehemiah Hankins, who bobbled the ball before hauling it in to tie the game. Norte Vista’s Lee White fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Granite Hills scored in three plays with Sayani Long running for a first down before punching it across the goal line with a second effort to take a 14-7 lead. “We’ve kind of been like, ‘When we’re ready, we’ll go,’ but against a team like Norte Vista you can’t do that,” Granite Hills coach Alex Gonzalez said. Allain got the ball nine times on Norte Vista’s next possession, running for gains of 10 and 16 yards as the Braves ran off a 14-play drive to get down to the 1. Seth Bolender dove across the goal line to tie the game near halftime. “Seth did a tremendous job of leading the team and running the offense,” Batdorf said. “He may have made some mistakes but he does a good job.” Norte Vista opened the second half with a seven-play scoring drive to take a 21-14 lead and had the ball again, but Bolender was picked off by Braylen Salazar, who returned it 40 yards to tie the game again. Granite Hills was driving but turned the ball over on downs to start the fourth quarter, and Norte Vista took 8 minutes off the clock with a 13-play, 71-yard drive capped by Allain’s 4-yard touchdown run for a 28-21 lead. With less than 4 minutes to play, Long grabbed a pair of first downs to keep the Cougars moving before dancing through line and darting 40 yards to score with 50 seconds remaining. Gonzalez then went for the 2-point conversion attempt but Long was stuffed at the goal line. “I thought we had to win right there, and I went with our best play behind our best player but we came up short,” Gonzalez said. Long totaled 139 rushing yards on 23 carries for Granite Hills (3-1), which had their Week 3 game cancelled  because of air quality. The last-minute onside kick was recovered by White, but Norte Vista failed to run out the clock after getting called for a personal foul. “We got a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for not taking a knee fast enough,” Batdorf said. ” And then (the referee) wouldn’t run the clock because it was against us.” Granite Hills had one more possession, but Sneed was sacked by Dave Iosefa and play was stopped with 1 second on the clock. The Cougars attempted a series of laterals on the game’s final play and scuffling players on the sideline near midfield had to be separated after the final whistle.
