AUSTIN (KXAN) -- As the city of Austin advances work on highway coverings atop the soon-to-be-expanded Interstate 35, residents will get a glimpse next week into what kinds of amenities those future highway caps could include. The city's Our Future 35 program will host an open house on Sept. 28 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Canopy Austin, located at 916 Springdale Road. Brianna Frey serves as program manager of the strategic projects team within the Austin Transportation and Public Works Department. She said next Saturday's open house will feature updated conceptual designs for the caps, as well as highlight some of the specific amenity recommendations made for each cap. Those recommendations came from community feedback collected over the past few months, including Our Future 35's May open house, a summertime survey and a series of listening sessions, stakeholder workshops and advising meetings. "I think the public and the community understand that this is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to influence the urban fabric of central Austin," Frey said. I-35 EXPANSION NEWS: How much will each phase of TxDOT's $4.5B I-35 expansion cost? Looking at community feedback, she added popular amenities for the Fourth to Seventh Streets cap, including food vendors, recreation, lawn space, public art and event space. Further north at the 38th to 41st streets cap, popular recommendations included play areas and pollinator gardens in addition to food vendors and lawn space. Beyond next week's meeting, Frey said Our Future 35 officials are ramping up work on the program's vision plan. That plan is set to be presented to the Austin City Council on Nov. 7, with the hopes of formally adopting it. As part of that vision plan, it will highlight the cap amenity concepts discussed at next week's open house, as well as touch on related cost estimates for them. Later in November, Frey added the Our Future 35 team will return to council to discuss the related funding commitments needing to be made with the Texas Department of Transportation. "Some of those [funding commitment] figures are still being evaluated as [TxDOT officials] continue to design and engineer their plans for the CapEx project -- especially some of those roadway elements that the cap and stitch program will be asked to pay some funding towards," she said. "But we hope to finalize those numbers before we go to council in late November." Alongside that vision plan, Frey said city staff are continuously working on the larger funding strategy for the program. That has been a particular area of interest for community members, she said, with city officials fielding questions on available federal grants, possible philanthropic partnerships and other initiatives. "Some other exciting programs that I think the public will be interested in hearing include our public art and wayfinding components, as well as a larger mobility plan that the city received some federal grant funding for," she said. "So we do have a lot in the works that will continue not only through [2024] but into [2025]." With these designs coming to fruition, Frey said she's excited to see the city expand upon "third spaces" that allow the community ample gathering sites. As Austin continues to grow, she added there needs to be more robust spaces where residents of all ages can gather. "That's what we've really been hearing a lot from our partners and adjacent neighborhoods, is some don't feel like they can walk [in the corridor] easily, and how can these caps really create an inviting place for people who can't walk?" she said. "How can we encourage shade coverage or really make those connections valuable for people that live adjacent, or the people who want to come back into central Austin and experience the amazing vibrancy and culture that Austin has?" For those who can't attend next weekend's open house in person, Frey said her team will be adding all the cap amenity plans and conceptual design documents online.
