Mayfield Village recently announced that its Cooking with the Coordinator classes will soon kick off to wind down the year. In the three classes, with the first one starting on Sept. 26, participants will make different seasonally based dishes in the comfort of the Mayfield Village’s Community Room, 6621 Wilson Mills Road. The first class will, according to a village news release, teach how to make chicken bacon ranch sliders, with the next class focusing on the secrets to making the “best pumpkin pie” and the final winter class concerned with how to bake hot chocolate cookies. All the recipes also will be given to the students so those who come can make them again at home. Parks and Recreation Director Shane McAvinew said that while cooking classes were offered in the past, they weren’t as popular as he had hoped. He decided to find a way to reduce the cost, and he found it in the form of Samantha Clark-Cartwright, the village’s program and facilities manager. The price is down to $12 per class. “Sam (Clark-Cartwright) actually teaches that class; she’s really good at cooking,” he said. “She was actually already teaching the classes for the seniors and our adapted and kids programs, which have taken off. “By having her do it, we are able to keep the price down for everybody,” McAvinew added. “So we did it in the past, and we weren’t really successful with it, and I think the reason was the cost … which was, I think, reasonable but was higher because we were hiring someone from the outside of the village. This now allows it to be very cost-effective, where we are just charging for the materials to do the class.” He said that the Cooking with the Coordinator program was a good example of trying out ideas again. He said that because people’s tastes change over time, what wasn’t popular before could be a hit now. “It’s been quite successful this round,” McAvinew said. “It’s a good example that if something might not be successful two or three years ago, it doesn’t mean that it won’t be successful now. Everyone is changing what they want. I always tell everybody if we have a program like that… let’s put it in the vault and bring it out in a few years and see how it does.” For a full list of dates or to sign up for the classes, you can contact 440-919-2332 or by visiting mayfieldvillage.activityreg.com.
