(WWLP) -A Federal Trade Commission (FTC) report found that social and video streaming services pose serious privacy risks, especially for kids and teens. According to an FTC report, these companies rely on data about users and non-users to sell ads. These companies don't give people any "meaningful control" over how their information is used. "Nobody wants their information on the dark web because who knows what is going to be done with it," said Jeanne Allen of Easthampton. Large social media companies and video streaming services like TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube could be putting your privacy at risk. That's according to a report from the Federal Trade Commission. The report finds these companies failed to protect users from "abusive data practices". For one Facebook user, she experienced her personal information being recently leaked. "The worry is that someone would do with it and either get for identity theft or just, you know, siphon the money off my account or whatever," said Allen. "Not only is it available on the dark web but now it is also available to these third parties and these apps you have willingly accepted its terms and conditions when you visited their website or downloaded an app," said Milagros Johnson, Director of the Mayor's Office of Consumer Information. Information was fed into these companies' automated systems, including for use by their algorithms, data analytics, and AI. "It's very powerful and the more information we feed into it the smarter it gets," said Johnson. The report also found that children and teens are particularly at risk. Several social media platforms didn't report any additional data protections and treated them largely like adults. "Talk to your children, collaborate with your children, give them examples of what the risks are," expressed Johnson. The FTC calls on Congress to pass comprehensive federal privacy legislation to limit surveillance, address baseline protections, and grant consumers data rights. Johnson does recommend reading the terms and conditions of any app before agreeing to it, to avoid your information from being compromised. If you do find your information has been violated from the app you're on report it to the FTC or the app. Local News Headlines Apple orchards across the region prepare for busy fall season ahead Chamber of Greater Easthampton opens new workspace on Union Street Federal Trade Commission finds social and video streaming services pose serious privacy risks All Elite Wrestling powerslams into Springfield City Hall before upcoming Collision show WWLP-22News, an NBC affiliate, began broadcasting in March 1953 to provide local news, network, syndicated, and local programming to western Massachusetts.
