AUSTIN (KXAN) — No. 14 Westlake fell to the mat in Week 3, but not only did they get back up Friday, they delivered a knockout performance. Behind 247 rushing yards and a 38-6 advantage after the first quarter, the Chaps took out No. 9 Cibolo Steele 41-16 in their final non-district game Friday at Lehnhoff Stadium in Schertz Texas high school football scores for Friday, Sept. 20 Westlake trailed 10-3 after the opening quarter and it looked like the Knights had all the momentum, but a big defensive play turned the tide for the Chaps. Thompson Bennett picked off a Chad Warner pass at the goal line and returned it to Steele territory, and then the floodgates opened. Westlake scored on the next two possessions to take a 20-10 halftime lead, and then put the game away in the second half, outscoring the Knights 21-6. "I'm just glad we finished," Chaps head coach Tony Salazar said. "Our boys showed up to work on Monday ready to fix their wrongs, and boy, did they play their butts off. It wasn't perfect, but they weren't leaving this field without a win." Salazar said the team's mantra in their fieldhouse is "kill the will," meaning to play so hard in the second half that the other team "doesn't want to play anymore." "We put a big steel frame around the fieldhouse and didn't let anybody in this week," Salazar said. "The kids responded, it was a helluva ballgame and we can take a deep breath now." Bennett's interception led to a 9-yard touchdown run by Grady Bartlett, and then on the next Westlake possession, the Chaps drove it down the field and ended it with a 2-yard scoring run by Rees Wise. With a field goal by Nolan Bartley in the frame, Westlake outscored Steele 17-0. Wise had two rushing touchdowns in the game, adding a 1-yard plunge with 3:18 left in the game. Grady Bartlett also scored twice on the ground for the Chaps. Brody Wilhelm caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from Wise in the second half. Bartley hit two field goals for the Chaps in the first half. Steele's Jonathan Hatton scored on a 75-yard run in the first quarter to give the Knights a 10-3 lead. Westlake (3-1) has a bye next week and will begin District 26-6A play Oct. 3 against Akins. Steele (3-1) takes on the team they share Lehnhoff Stadium with, Schertz Clemens, in their district opener Sept. 27. More highlights
