Homicide detectives are investigating after a 62-year-old homeless woman was attacked and killed at her La Mesa encampment Thursday, police said. Officers were dispatched after a 911 caller reported finding an unconscious woman with a serious head injury at a campsite on High Street just north of state Route 94 around 10:35 p.m., La Mesa police Sgt. Jose Gaytan said. Police arrived and went to offer medical aid, but the woman was dead, Gaytan said. Her name was not released pending notification of her family. The county Medical Examiner’s Office will determine how she died. Detectives suspect the woman had been attacked at the campsite within hours before she was discovered, Gaytan said. No calls reporting a disturbance in the area had been made leading up to her death. According to investigators, a man with a beard was seen leaving the area a few hours before she was found. Police said the man is a person of interest in the case. Investigators asked anyone with information about the incident to call the police department at (619) 667-1400. Anonymous tips can be left with Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477 or online at sdcrimestoppers.org, and information that leads to an arrest in the case could bring a reward of up to $1,000.
