First responders said the building was evacuated and several people have been displaced. Angel Requeno, who lives in the apartment building, told DC News Now that he heard the loud explosion and ran out of his apartment. "My thoughts immediately was to grab the nearest fire extinguisher and then I kind of heroically went into the burning apartment, and to find out the stove was still on. The gas was leaking, so I shut off everything from the stove and made sure no more gas was coming out. Then I started extinguishing everything that was smoking or burning," recalled Requenoo. The Washington Gas told DC News Now that crews inspected the meter and found no signs of a leak or damage. The fire department shut off the gas from inside the building and the Service Technician turned off the gas at the meter. Officials said a crew is conducting hazmat meterings for any remaining gas and a collapse Task Force is en route to evaluate the structure of the building. This is a developing story.
