ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — A man has been sentenced to four decades in prison following two deadly shootings last year in Rochester. Naveair Stewart, 19, has been sentenced to 40 years in prison and five years of post-release supervision. This came after the deaths of 18-year-old Shanye Mootry and 28-year-old Jevonte Huff. On May 29, 2023, the Rochester Police Department was investigating gunfire at Anthony Jordan Health Center. Officers found Mootry, who was shot to death while sitting inside a vehicle. It was determined she wasn't involved in the gunfire but got caught in the crossfire. On August 26, 2023, officers responded to a gas station on Dewey Avenue and found Huff shot in the upper body. He died shortly after arriving at the hospital. Investigators said Huff was not the intended target of the shooting. Officers later responded to a drive-by shooting at the corner of Agnes Street and Hudson Avenue. After chasing a vehicle, police arrested Stewart and 19-year-old Thailea Arroyo. Stewart was initially charged with second-degree murder but pleaded not guilty. Stewart eventually pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree manslaughter. Arroyo also faced a second-degree murder charge but pleaded not guilty.
