ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The topic of phones in schools has been at the forefront at the national and local levels. Gov. Kathy Hochul has recently supported the idea of a potential student phone ban statewide. Although the governor has not made any announcement of a mandate yet, local school leaders are weighing in. The governor shared her concerns on the impact of smartphones and social media on students during a conference with NYSUT leaders Friday. "When it comes to our kids on a topic like we're discussing today, doing nothing is simply not an option," said Hochul. Chris Dailey, superintendent of Gates Chili CSD, leads the Monroe County Council of Superintendents this school year. "It's individual schools' choices currently. If the governor were to legislate it, obviously, we would have to adapt. Right now, it's up to individual school districts to choose how they handle it at different grade levels or throughout the district. So, it is a discussion point as to when or if this will occur. As usual, as a group, we'll talk about it and make the best decisions based what is legal versus not at that point," said Dailey. Hochul says she has heard from teachers across the state who are sounding off on the distractions. "I'm listening to teachers and 75 percent across the country say this is a huge distraction. The teachers I've met in person, who say, 'I'm in competition. I'm trying to teach, engage, make eye contact, and have a relationship with these kids because that's how I create a bond, and they're not even looking at me," said Hochul. Locally, school leaders say they will be prepared to adjust and adapt as needed. "We'll adjust based on what happens. It could be September. It could be January. We can't speculate, but what we're hearing is that it could be coming at the turn of the year. So, if it happens in another week, then obviously we'll adjust then. But, we'll see. We'll be prepared," said Dailey. While there is no current timeline or confirmation on a potential phone ban for students, Gov. Hochul stands by her opposition on the matter. This is a developing story.
