FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - A 55-year-old man from Fresno, who is a former registered sex offender has been indicted for allegedly receiving child pornography, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. The DOJ says a federal grand jury returned an indictment on Thursday against Darren Kieth Sever, 55, of Fresno, charging him with receipt of child pornography. According to court documents, between April 4 and June 4 of this year, Sever received one visual deception of children engaged in sexually explicit conduct. The DOJ says Sever has a prior conviction that required him to register as a sex offender up until April 17 of this year. If convicted, the DOJ says Sever can face a maximum statutory penalty of up to 15 years in prison and up to a $250,000 fine. The DOJ adds that any sentence, however, would be determined at the discretion of the court after consideration of any applicable statutory factors and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which take into account a number of variables. The charges are only allegations; the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
