FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - Fresno Unified officials announced Friday that the district was a target of check fraud and that $4 million in funds were prevented from being lost. Unified officials say the fraud involved attempts to cash unauthorized checks from the district to one of its vendors. According to district officials, they have been cooperating fully with law enforcement and investigative agencies. They say not long after learning of the fraud, the Department of Homeland Security reached out to confirm they had found out that this fraud was a part of a larger check fraud ring. Unified officials say the investigation revealed that several checks totaling about $7 million were fraudulently attempted. They say that through swift action, about $4 million in funds were prevented from being lost. According to officials, to date some of the stolen funds have already been recovered, and they anticipate that all remaining funds will be recovered. Fresno Unified says that they have investigated internally, revisiting their controls and processes to ensure they are keeping up with the ever-changing landscape of fraud. The school district says that although the County of Fresno is a signatory on the checks, they had no involvement in this fraud and bear no responsibility for the actions that took place. They say that the county has assisted the district since the beginning of the investigation to ensure the potential recovery of funds.
