(KRON) -- Joseph Anthony Abeyta has been charged with the 1987 homicide of a local machine and sheet metal worker, according to the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office. Abeyta is accused of strangling Jesus Ibarra to death with a power cord in April 1987,  according to authorities.  “There is no statute of limitations on finding, arresting, and prosecuting people who hurt and kill the people of our community,” District Attorney Jeff Rosen said. ‘Violent criminals should look over their shoulders because we’re coming.” Photo of victim Jesus Ibarra (Santa Clara County DA's Office) On April 22, 1987, Ibarra was found by family members dead inside his apartment on Nordale Avenue in San Jose. His family members said they had not seen Ibarra in 3 days. Authorities said medical examiners determined Ibarra suffered from blunt force trauma to the neck.  Bay Area city among ‘rudest’ in America, according to a 2024 survey This case was reopened this year. Crime lab technology identified the suspect as Abeyta, the San Jose Police Department. The District Attorney's Office said the victim and Abeyta knew each other. Police speculate that Abeyta stole Ibarra’s gold chain necklace, a ring and his car, which was found burnt. Ibarra’s car was found less than a block away from where Abeyta was living at the time.  Abeyta is set to be arraigned on Friday. According to the District Attorney's Office, if Abeyta is convicted he faces up to 25 years to life in prison.
