TOPEKA (KSNT) - Kansas state troopers are cautioning drivers to slow down and be aware of their surroundings as farmers collect their harvest. April McCollum with the Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) issued a press release on Friday, Sept. 20 regarding the ongoing fall harvest efforts. Drivers may find themselves sharing the road with large farm equipment and machinery like trucks, tractors and combines. “As the busy farming season is underway, each traveler in Kansas needs to be more aware of increased farm implement and truck traffic,” said KHP Captain Candice Breshears. “In Kansas, we have many trucks exiting and entering the roadways at any given time. Traveling around these vehicles requires extra caution.” Why are some corn farm fields left to dry out in Kansas? McCollum said farmers use equipment which is not meant to travel at highway speeds and may only go 15-25 mph. This equipment may also be wider than a standard lane of traffic. Drivers should be patient when sharing the road with these specialized farming vehicles and follow several safety tips: Don't assume the farmer knows you're there. Pass with extreme caution. When a farm vehicle is pulled off to the right side of the road, this does not mean it is turning right or letting you pass. Have plenty of patience and be ready to wait. Be aware of slow-moving vehicle emblems as warnings to adjust your speed. Pay attention to your surroundings. For more Kansas news, click here.
