BOSTON, Mass. (SHNS)--A bipartisan trio of senators asked Attorney General Andrea Campbell to tap a special investigator to examine the death of a Massachusetts State Police recruit following an apparent injury during a training exercise. Democrat Sens. Michael Moore of Millbury and Robyn Kennedy of Worcester and Republican Sen. Peter Durant of Spencer wrote to Campbell requesting a conflict-of-interest special assistant attorney general to probe the circumstances leading to the death of Worcester resident Enrique Delgado-Garcia. Officials investigating death of State Police recruit Enrique Delgado-Garcia Delgado-Garcia became unresponsive in a boxing ring during a State Police Academy training exercise last week, according to WCVB, and he died a day later. Worcester District Attorney Joe Early Jr. said he has a conflict of interest because Delgado-Garcia previously worked for him. The senators pointed to media reports describing hazing and harassment in the academy, and said that "only a fully empowered Conflict SAAG" could deliver the "comprehensive and independent investigation" warranted. They called for an independent investigator to be empowered to "issue and enforce compulsory legal process for documents and testimony" and prosecute any state-level crimes discovered, plus refer relevant matters to federal officials. "We acknowledge that an independent investigation into the Commonwealth's State Police is a major development, but the recent history of the State Police, other allegations of harassment at the State Police Academy and this incident warrant this response," they wrote.
