SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – More than 100 Jenkins High School students walked out of their high school Friday morning as a part of a statewide push for gun safety. This comes in the wake of the deadly shooting that took place at Apalachee High School in Georgia. Jenkins students assembled on the football field to talk about common-sense gun safety legislation for the state and passing the Pediatric Health Safe Storage Act, which aims to establish the offense of making a firearm accessible to a child in Georgia. The students chanted that thoughts and prayers are not enough and that they want to see change for their safety. Georgia official seeks more school safety money after Apalachee High shooting Organizers say the student-led walkout demonstrated that young people care, and the high turnout is evidence of that. "We were calling on students to use their voice," said Harrison Tran, the head organizer and a senior at Jenkins High School. "Again, this is an election year. 2024. We have candidates up and down the ballot from the presidential to the Chatham County District Attorney. All these people play a role in regulating gun violence in Savannah and also state and federal levels." The students spoke with their principal ahead of the event to confirm that no students who participated would be penalized. They were required to return to class after the walkout.
